Leukorrhea is a discharge that comes from the vagina, usually whitish or yellowish in colour.  Leukorrhea, when infective can be a brownish colour meaning an infection!

Frequent causes of Leukorrhea are Trichomoniasis, Candida, Bacterial Vaginosis, and STD’s. Leukorrhea is very common and can occur during puberty, after childbirth, during PreMenopause, under times of stress, from a poor diet or even from an imbalance in estrogen.

Thick White Discharge is a very common symptom of Leukorrhea or Candia, it is important not to confuse normal white discharge that accompanies ovulation. Abnormal discharge is associated with other symptoms such as pain, itching, foul smell or rash depending on the specific cause. It can also be a sign of an STD.

Candida is the most common cause of fungal infection in the world today; while many species are not harmful Candida albicans can be dangerous if not treated. Antibiotics, STD’s and diabetes can cause yeast infections due to an impaired immune system, in fact nearly 100,000 people in the US alone.

Leukorrhea can be caused by a cervicitis.  This usually happens when there is a blockage in the cervix leading to an infection in the vagina, the infections can be chronic!  Another form of infection can come from vaginitis or the inflammation of the vagina caused by the bacteria candida albicans, this is also called monilial vaginitis.  An STD can also be the cause of abnormal discharge.

There are many things you can do for leukorrhea at home now!  Apple cider vinegar is a great way to get the bacteria under control.  Fenugreek (found in Vitality) gently balances the pH in the vagina and controls estrogen levels.  One thing most every doctor agrees on is to keep proper hygiene, eat a healthy diet and NEVER douche.

Trichomonal Vaginitis is sometimes known as the sex-leukorrhea because it often occurs from sex toys that are not cleaned properly.  It can also occur from garments, such as underwear that are worn for a long period of time.  A sexually transmitted disease can also be the culprit.

Understanding Leukorrhea / Leucorrhea

Leukorrhea / Leucorrhea Faq's

Leukorrhea is best described as a whitish or yellowish discharge that comes from the vagina.  The term “Leukorrhea” can cause some confusion because it is spelled different ways: Leucorrhea, Leukorrhea and Leucorrhea.  Symptoms can include thick white discharge, yellowish discharge, dark coloured discharge, puberty, stress, menopause, std’s, poor diet and infections.  Every woman will get Leukorrhea at least once in their lives, it is not uncommon for woman to experience it many times in their lives.

Estrogen is a common factor in the cause of Leukorrhea, this is why almost all women get leukorrhea first when they hit puberty, second when pregnant and thirdly nearing menopause.  Bacteria Vaginosis, Candida Albicans, vaginal yeast infections, poor diet and sexually transmitted disease are all common triggers for leukorrhea.

A leukorrhea vaginal infection can be caused by different issues, the most common is a yeast infection (Candida Albans Overgrowth) and secondly Vaginitis.  Yeast infections are often associated with leukorrhea. The discharge may be different, but any imbalance in the vagina can lead to both conditions. In some cases, they are mistaken for one another. With a yeast infection you’ll notice a white, cottage cheese like texture from the discharge. With leukorrhea you’ll notice a foul-smelling odor and thinner discharge.

Vaginitis is an equally uncomfortable condition. It causes itching and even a foul-smell. Any condition that causes inflammation in the vagina is referred to by doctors as vaginitis.

Physiologic Leukorrhea is a term used to describe the estrogen stimulation that can occur for numerous reasons.  Most commonly this leukorrhea is brought on by puberty, pregnancy or pre-menopause.  This is a normal and should not cause any concern, however when there is pain swelling or other irritation you may be experiencing Candida Overgrowth.

Pathological Leukorrhea or Pathological Leucorrhoea is a disease in the reproduction tract.  Different from physiological leukorrhea, Pathological leukorrhea needs to be treated or it could lead to infertility or uterus problems leading to removable.  It is important to remember that not all leukorrhea is bad!  physiological leukorrhea can be a result of naturally occurring estrogen from puberty or ovulation.

Symptoms of Pathological Leukorrhea / Leucorrhoea

  • Itchy Vulva
  • Odor
  • inflammation
  • discoloured vaginal mucus
  • pain
  • bleeding
  • infection
  • Tiredness
  • Headaches

Having some Candida in your body is very normal and rarely does it cause any problems.  When your bodies pH is affected due to poor diet, high stress, antibiotics, birth control, cancer treatments or just a weak immune system, you may experience Candida Overgrowth.

Some common symptoms of Candida Overgrowth:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • UT Infections
  • Low Sex Drive
  • Brain Fog
  • Anxiety or mood disorders
  • Flu Symptoms
  • Stomach distress

Inflammation can occur as a result of Leukorrhea that is not dealt with, it can also be a result of vaginitis, yeast infections or an STD.  It is dangerous to ignore the inflammation symptoms for too long as serious infection can move upwards from the cervix to the uterus or even to the ovaries.  Infertility could result.

Groups of parasites  (protozoan referred to as “Trichomonads” ) can cause leukorrhea with yellowish, dark coloured discharge.  This discharge, because parasitic can result in symptoms of extreme itching, burning, inflammation and pain. This is different from the common yeast infection that is caused by Candida overgrowth.
